Duodenal San Diego: SADI Duodenal Switch Procedures – What is SADI?

What is SADI? SADI-S, or single anastomosis duodeno–ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy, is another option available to our patients who are trying to lose weight.

It’s one of the reasons why so many patients struggling with obesity and obesity-related health problems visit Olde Del Mar Surgical for bariatric surgeries in San Diego.

SADI-S is relatively new in the bariatric world. It has resulted in excellent outcomes and tremendous successes for patients who have persistent severe obesity (despite previous sleeve gastrectomies) and/or patients with an initial BMI of greater than 50kg/m2.

The caring and experienced team at Olde Del Mar Surgical invites patients to consider the SADI-S procedure in San Diego. It has been proven to help obese patients lose weight.

As with all bariatric surgeries, this procedure is not for everyone. There may be concerns regarding long-term nutritional deficits and the possibility of complications.

We can work to counteract these potential complications. You will discuss this and more with your surgeon when you come in for an initial consultation.

SADI San Diego

At present, we are the ONLY practice in San Diego and one of only a few in California to offer the SADI-S operation. SADI-S in San Diego is often considered revisional surgery as it is often used following sleeve gastrectomy.

It’s important to remember that this procedure differs slightly from the biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. That procedure removes part of the stomach (up to three-fourths of the stomach entirely), while also rerouting the intestines (i.e., bypassing the small intestine).

The single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S) is very similar. The result of the surgery will be to limit how much food — and therefore calories — one can consume.

CALCULATE YOUR BMI

Body Mass Index (BMI) Weight Loss Calculator

In order to be considered a suitable candidate for weight loss surgery, you must have either morbid obesity or obesity with co-morbid health problems such as diabetes. We use the body mass index (BMI) system to calculate your body weight:

  • BMI of 30 to 40 indicates obesity
  • BMI of higher than 40 is commonly referred to as morbid obesity.

Insurance typically covers surgery if your BMI is greater than 40, or in some instances between 35 and 40, if you have ongoing illnesses that are related to obesity. The FDA has approved weight loss surgery for people with a BMI of greater that 30, but these lower BMI categories are not typically covered by insurance.
