He is a fellowship-trained specialist in laparoscopic surgery, an attending surgeon at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, and Outpatient Surgery Center.
Dr. Bhoyrul is Chief of Surgery and Medical Director for Bariatric Surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital. He is an award-winning surgeon in charge of Olde Del Mar Surgical. He is a fellowship-trained specialist in laparoscopic surgery, an attending surgeon at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, and Outpatient Surgery Center in La Jolla. Each year since 2005, Dr. Bhoyrul has been selected by his peers as one of the “Best Doctors in America.” He has been previously recognized in Newsweek magazine, and also voted San Diego Magazine’s “Top Doctor” , 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and the American College of Surgeons.
He has been educated and trained at some of the world’s finest medical institutions, including undergraduate and medical school at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, a laparoscopic surgery fellowship at the department of surgery at UC San Francisco, and general surgery residency at Stanford University Medical Center. He was Chief Resident in Surgery at Stanford University.
Dr. Bhoyrul has contributed significant original research to the field of laparoscopic surgery, with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. He is co-editor of Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery, one of the first textbooks in the field. As a laparoscopic surgery specialist, Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul regularly performs Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery, Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery, Gastric banding surgery (lap band surgery), colectomy, gastrectomy, anti-reflux surgery, appendectomy, splenectomy, hernia repair, adrenalectomy and other complex, minimally invasive surgical procedures.
As part of his interest in Surgical Oncology, he is one of only a small number of surgeons performing resections for pancreatic cancer, gastric and esophageal cancer.
Dr. Bhoyrul is a co founder of “MD Revolution”, a medical practice dedicated to using genomics and wireless health technology as part of a health and wellness plan to prevent and treat chronic illness such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Dr Bhoyrul also performs several types of cosmetic surgery. Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul continues to teach surgeons nationally and present his work at national and international meetings.
