Revisional Bariatric Surgery

What is Revisional Bariatric Surgery?

Revisional bariatric surgery refers to a surgical weight loss procedure that follows a previous weight loss surgery that did not exhibit the desired results. This includes gastric sleeve revision and gastric bypass revision. Revisional surgery can be required due to physical, medical or behavioral reasons, or sometimes a combination of these factors.

Revisions for a Revisional Bariatric Surgery

  • Failure to lose enough weight
  • Weight regain
  • Medical complications

Considering a Gastric Sleeve Revision or Gastric Bypass Revision in San Diego?

When it comes to revisional bariatric surgery, our goal is to get to know our patients, get to the root of the weight regain, and address each issue separately. After a complete clinical assessment, it may be appropriate to work with a clinical psychologist, endocrinologist (hormone specialist), or gastroenterologist.

The type of revisional bariatric surgery will vary from patient to patient.

  • Patients who’ve undergone a gastric bypass may need a gastric bypass revision, which aims at making an enlarged pouch smaller, or placement of a gastric band around the pouch to help with better restriction.
  • Patients with previous stomach stapling, also known as a vertical banded gastroplasty, may need conversion to a gastric bypass.
  • Patients who have had problems with their lap band can benefit from a sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass.
  • Patients who have chronic problems with a sleeve gastrectomy may also benefit from conversion to gastric bypass.

CALCULATE YOUR BMI

Body Mass Index (BMI) Weight Loss Calculator

In order to be considered a suitable candidate for weight loss surgery, you must have either morbid obesity or obesity with co-morbid health problems such as diabetes. We use the body mass index (BMI) system to calculate your body weight:

  • BMI of 30 to 40 indicates obesity
  • BMI of higher than 40 is commonly referred to as morbid obesity.

Insurance typically covers surgery if your BMI is greater than 40, or in some instances between 35 and 40, if you have ongoing illnesses that are related to obesity. The FDA has approved weight loss surgery for people with a BMI of greater that 30, but these lower BMI categories are not typically covered by insurance.
