Safe, Effective Weight Loss with Bariatric Surgery

For the majority of patients who suffer from severe obesity, diet and exercise are often ineffective. These strategies usually lead to temporary weight loss, followed by rapid weight regain.

Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul offers patients with morbid obesity the opportunity to combine diet and exercise with effective weight loss surgery. He integrates weight loss surgery with comprehensive preparation, post-operative care, support, and lifestyle management.

How Does Bariatric Surgery Work?

The Impactful Results Of Weight Loss Surgery

Significant weight loss is the most well-known benefit of weight loss surgery. Typically, patients will lose 40% to 65% of excess body weight from surgery.

When combined with diet and exercise, weight loss surgery allows people to finally reach their goal weight and enjoy the improved quality of life that they deserve.

Weight loss surgery also results in an increase in overall health. Many co-morbidities of obesity will be dramatically reduced after surgery, including:

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Infertility
  • Joint and Muscle Pain

Which Weight Loss Surgery Procedure is Right For You?

At Olde Del Mar Surgical, we offer a number of minimally invasive, laparoscopic weight loss surgeries.

Each procedure is slightly different. However, they all result in creating a smaller stomach. Weight loss surgery has been shown to be a highly effective cure for obesity and related diseases.

Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul can help you determine which weight loss surgery is best suited for you.

Body Mass Index (BMI) Weight Loss Calculator

In order to be considered a suitable candidate for weight loss surgery, you must have either morbid obesity or obesity with co-morbid health problems such as diabetes. We use the body mass index (BMI) system to calculate your body weight:

Insurance typically covers surgery if your BMI is greater than 40, or in some instances between 35 and 40, if you have ongoing illnesses that are related to obesity. The FDA has approved weight loss surgery for people with a BMI of greater that 30, but these lower BMI categories are not typically covered by insurance.

Other Requirements for Weight Loss Surgery

In addition to morbid obesity, our weight loss surgery patients must also:

  • Be over 18 years old: In some emergency cases, teenagers can undergo bariatric surgery
  • Be able to understand and agree to the probable outcome and potential risks of surgery
  • Have unsuccessfully tried to lose weight through diet and exercise
  • Be in good general health: Surgical weight loss is potentially risky and patients must be healthy enough to tolerate a surgical procedure.
  • Be able to meet post-surgical requirements: After surgery, patients will be subject to strict dietary and exercise requirements. Patients will not be able to improve their health without adhering to a comprehensive long-term weight loss plan. Patients who fail to adhere to these requirements will not realize the full benefits of weight loss surgery.
  • Have realistic expectations: Anyone undergoing a procedure with our bariatric surgeons must be able to understand and accept the limitations of the procedure. Bariatric surgery is not an instant cure for morbid obesity. It requires lifelong dedication, follow up, and patients must be psychologically prepared both for surgery and the post-surgical period.
