Surgery for Stomach Cancer
Our first goal is to confirm the diagnosis (by reviewing your biopsy results) and then ascertain the stage of the disease. This is done through a combination of scans (CT scan, PET scan), endoscopy, and blood tests.
For patients with stage 1 and 2 disease, we usually recommend surgery as the next step. Patients with stage 4 disease need chemotherapy, and patients with stage 3 stomach cancer, treatment will include both surgery and chemotherapy. In some cases chemotherapy can be helpful in shrinking the tumor before surgical resection.
At Olde Del Mar Surgical we offer removal of the stomach (or part of the stomach) to patients for whom this may be appropriate. Laparoscopic surgery has the potential for less pain, faster recovery, a shorter hospital stay, and a quicker return to normal activity. Dr. Bhoyrul has performed complete resection of the stomach, with intestinal reconstruction, entirely laparoscopically.
