Stomach Cancer

Cancer of the stomach is a serious illness that usually requires a stomach cancer treatment that combines surgical and medical treatment.

Our first goal is to confirm the diagnosis (by reviewing your biopsy results) and then ascertain the stage of the disease. This is done through a combination of scans (CT scan, PET scan), endoscopy, and blood tests.

For patients with stage 1 and 2 disease, we usually recommend surgery as the next step. Patients with stage 4 disease need chemotherapy, and patients with stage 3 stomach cancer, treatment will include both surgery and chemotherapy. In some cases chemotherapy can be helpful in shrinking the tumor before surgical resection.

At Olde Del Mar Surgical we offer removal of the stomach (or part of the stomach) to patients for whom this may be appropriate. Laparoscopic surgery has the potential for less pain, faster recovery, a shorter hospital stay, and a quicker return to normal activity. Dr. Bhoyrul has performed complete resection of the stomach, with intestinal reconstruction, entirely laparoscopically.

Regardless of the nature of your illness and the type of stomach cancer treatment we recommend, we recognize that this can be an exceptionally challenging time for you and your family. We will do our best to surround you with the experts you need to provide state of the art treatment, but also the caring and compassionate physicians and nurses to attend to your emotional and physical needs. Frankly, it is our privilege and honor to be trusted by your and your family to take care of you, and manage your illness.
