Rosie O'Donnell has Bariatric Surgery
Have you seen Rosie O’Donnell on TV lately? She’s been looking noticeably thinner and she shared some news last week: she had weight loss surgery and has lost about 40 pounds so far. O’Donnell had been trying to lose weight after surviving a serious heart attack, but found that modified eating habits and exercise were not enough. She then had gastric sleeve surgery, which is the same procedure comedian Lisa Lampanelli had last year.
O’Donnell announced her news about bariatric surgery at an American Heart Association-sponsored event. She explained she chose bariatric surgery because she was concerned about her health. Other than the serious heart attach she suffered, she was pre-diabetic and had high blood pressure & high cholesterol. Dr Sunil Bhoyrul has been performing the gastric sleeve for years and we’ve had many patients in the same situation as Rosie O’Donnell: they get to a point in their lives where they realize their health is too important to continue delaying medical treatment. The medical treatment O’Donnell chose is not an alternative to healthy lifestyle changes. Instead it is a tool that significantly enhances weight loss and improvement of obesity-related health conditions.
Studies have shown that early intervention is best, so if you are thinking about bariatric surgery, the sooner weight is lost, the better. Major medical associations, including the American Heart Association, have released guidelines are urging physicians to address excess weight with their patients.
