Laparoscopic Surgery

During a laparoscopic surgery, several small incisions are made in the abdomen. Carbon dioxide gas is instilled into the abdominal cavity in order to move the abdominal wall away from the organs and creating a larger space in which to work. Through one of the incisions, the surgeon then inserts a laparoscope.

This is a tiny camera that projects the images it records onto a large monitor, allowing the surgeon to see inside of the body without having to make a long incision.

The advantages of laparoscopy are numerous and include the following:

  • Less pain and discomfort after surgery
  • Faster recovery
  • Smaller, more discrete scars
  • Reduced risk of some complications

Advanced Laparoscopy

In addition to their training in general surgery, Dr. Bhoyrul is trained in advanced laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Bhoyrul co-edited one of the original textbooks on the subject. Advanced laparoscopy involves suturing, stapling, bowel resection, solid organ surgery, surgery for reflux,  cancer, colon resection, and weight loss surgery. An example of they type of surgery our doctors perform at our La Jolla practice, convenient to both metro San Diego and North County, are the procedures used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions that typically afflict patients who suffer from GERD.
